Gauff Praises Mboko’s Excellent Play After Canadian Open Victory
Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko celebrated a major career milestone by defeating top-seeded Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-4. This victory advanced her to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open held at Center Court this past Saturday.
Mboko, ranked 85th globally, secured the win against the American player in just 1 hour and 2 minutes. Overwhelmed by her achievement, she dropped her racket and expressed her astonishment.
Addressing the audience after her win, Mboko expressed her gratitude for the support she received from the home crowd. She acknowledged that their encouragement significantly contributed to her success.
“Thank you, you helped me so much,” Mboko stated.
Mboko described her journey to the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 event as ‘incredible,’ especially considering her triumph over the reigning French Open champion.
Mboko benefited from her opponent’s mistakes, as Gauff struggled with her serve and could not capitalize on any of her five break-point opportunities.
Despite the setback, Gauff congratulated Mboko at the net. Gauff is now focused on preparing for a strong performance at the upcoming US Open next month.
Gauff commended Mboko, recognizing the Canadian’s exceptional playing skills. Following the match, Gauff admitted that Mboko performed better.
“She’s playing high-level tennis,” Gauff remarked.
“I think that’s what showed today. I think she was the better player.”
Mboko is set to compete against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain, who won against Lin Zhu of China with scores of 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 in a match delayed by rain and concluded near midnight.
On the men’s side, Alex Michelsen advanced to his first quarterfinal in a Masters 1000 event. He secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory over fellow American player Learner Tien.
