Manny Pacquiao Announces Boxing Return Against Mario Barrios
LAS VEGAS: Boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is preparing to re-enter the ring this July for a significant match against WBC welterweight titleholder Mario Barrios at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
This fight marks Pacquiao’s first competition since August 2021, when he faced a defeat by unanimous decision against Yordenis Ugas, a moment many thought would be his last in the sport.
At 46, Pacquiao’s return has fueled considerable discussion among enthusiasts and experts, focusing on his age, possible lack of recent practice, and the strength of his rival.
Despite these concerns, the celebrated Filipino fighter—holding a record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 2 draws—is determined to pursue another championship, nearly 30 years after starting his professional journey in 1995.
Pacquiao emphasized his goal to serve as an inspiration for young athletes and boxing enthusiasts, while also commenting on his recent induction into the Hall of Fame, which he found both unreal and incredibly humbling.
“I am aiming to inspire young individuals and those passionate about boxing,” Pacquiao stated. “It is a profound honor to be recognized in the Hall of Fame. It’s a part of history, and something I never anticipated during my boxing career.”
Mario Barrios, 29, approaches the fight with considerable energy, having previously triumphed over Yordenis Ugas in September 2023. This victory has solidified his growing position within the highly competitive welterweight division.
Concurrently, Ugas, now 38, has declared his intentions to return to boxing following successive defeats by Errol Spence Jr. and Barrios.
“I have dedicated nearly two years to training, which has become a way of life for me,” Ugas mentioned. “My ambition is to challenge a fourth consecutive champion.”
