Manchester United Secures Thrilling Victory Over Lyon

MANCHESTER: In a captivating Europa League quarter-final showdown at Old Trafford, Manchester United overcame a two-goal deficit in extra time to triumph over Lyon with a final score of 7-6, revitalizing their season.

Lyon’s Rayan Cherki’s exceptional goal and Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty had placed United at a 4-2 disadvantage in extra time. However, a remarkable seven-minute surge saw goals from United’s captain Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and a decisive strike from Harry Maguire, ultimately securing the win for the Red Devils.

United initiated the match strongly, with Manuel Ugarte scoring early, followed by Diogo Dalot extending the lead in the first half’s added time.

Lyon retaliated, erasing the 2-0 deficit by the 105th minute and leveling the score within five minutes, setting the stage for United’s stunning comeback that clinched their semi-final berth.

“Describing that game as madness would be fitting. It was an unbelievable experience to emerge victorious from such a chaotic match, creating lasting memories for our supporters. We’ve given them plenty to discuss, both positively and negatively,” Maguire commented post-match.

United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, believes that this victory can still lead to a remarkable season.

“The atmosphere in the stadium was unparalleled,” Amorim shared with TNT Sports. “Some collect memorabilia, but I want to preserve that sound—it’s the greatest. I empathize with those who had to leave early at 4-2 due to traffic; they will be devastated.

“We acknowledge our underperformance and accept the criticism, but we have the opportunity to make this season memorable. It was an exceptional night; the team was fatigued, and at 4-2 with an extra player, it seemed insurmountable, but anything is possible here.

“You can feel the energy here.”

United is set to face Athletic Club in the semi-final’s first leg on May 1, after they secured their spot by defeating Rangers 2-0 on aggregate.
