Maddison to Undergo Surgery, Faces Lengthy Absence

Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison is set to undergo surgery and is expected to be sidelined for a significant portion of the 2025-2026 season, the club revealed on Thursday.

The midfielder sustained an injury during a pre-season match against Newcastle United. The game concluded in a 1-1 draw last Sunday, and Maddison was stretchered off the pitch.

Following the match, head coach Thomas Frank noted that the injury involved the same knee that had previously caused Maddison to miss a portion of the prior season. Frank described the injury as ‘bad’ and a ‘difficult moment’ for the team.

The club communicated the information in a statement:

“It has been confirmed that James Maddison will have surgery to repair a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee,” the club stated.

Last season, Maddison recorded 12 goals and 11 assists across all competitions.

His surgery is scheduled for the coming days, after which he will commence rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff.

Everyone associated with Spurs wishes Maddison a swift and complete recovery.

While the club has not specified a return date, it is generally understood that ACL injuries typically require a recovery period of at least six months.

Spurs will commence their new season with a UEFA Super Cup match against Champions League victors Paris Saint-Germain.
