Lyon Criticizes Stokes’ Captaincy Following Test Drama

MELBOURNE: Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has voiced his criticism of England’s captain, Ben Stokes, after the thrilling conclusion of the fourth Test match between England and India in Manchester.

Speaking from Melbourne, Lyon expressed his astonishment at England’s strategy of allowing Indian batsmen to achieve century scores.

“They should have been dismissed before reaching that milestone. More pressure could have been applied by Stokes and his team, instead of letting the game unfold passively,” Lyon commented.

As he prepares for the upcoming Ashes series, the off-spinner anticipates an aggressive approach from England, consistent with their ‘Bazball’ style.

“I fully expect them to come at me. It’s common for touring teams to declare their intent to target the spinner, so I am accustomed to that. When players attempt to attack, it draws me further into the play. I am devising plans and strategies I want to implement,” Lyon stated.

Lyon also spoke about his exclusion from Australia’s final Test during their recent tour of the Caribbean. While disappointed, he admitted he understood the reasoning.

“I aim to participate in every match for Australia and believe I can contribute effectively under any conditions. I won’t deny my disappointment with the decision, but I fully accepted it,” he said.

The 37-year-old also lauded England’s proactive style under the guidance of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, recognizing its influence on contemporary Test cricket.

“That is the approach England has adopted, and it has created compelling viewing. ‘Bazball’ has undergone some evolution; they are now focused on securing victories while avoiding recklessness,” Lyon concluded.

Notably, the fifth and decisive Test between England and India is scheduled to commence this Thursday at The Oval, with England currently leading the series 2-1.
