Deandre Ayton Joins Los Angeles Lakers

LOS ANGELES: Deandre Ayton has reportedly reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Lakers, signing a two-year contract valued at USD 34 million for the upcoming season. The announcement was made by international media outlets on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old center finalized the deal after expressing his interest in playing for a team with championship aspirations. The Portland Trail Blazers, currently focused on developing a young roster including Donovan Clingan, consented to a buyout of Ayton’s existing contract.

According to league officials, Portland lauded Ayton for his leadership qualities and mentorship of younger players during his time with the Trail Blazers.

It is anticipated that Ayton will assume the role of starting center for the Lakers, becoming part of a significantly reshaped team that also features Luka Doncic, a fellow member of the 2018 NBA Draft class. Ayton and Doncic, who were the first and third picks, respectively, in the 2018 draft, have maintained a strong friendship since entering the NBA.

Reportedly, several teams including the Pacers, Knicks, Clippers, Bucks, Cavaliers and Nuggets showed interest in acquiring Ayton. Despite the widespread interest, Ayton ultimately decided to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers. Known for his consistency and impact near the basket, Ayton recorded averages of 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game in the previous season.

He also demonstrated remarkable shooting efficiency, converting 56.6 percent of his field goal attempts. His decision to join the Lakers is expected to bolster their frontcourt considerably, as they aim to make a deep playoff run.

Throughout his seven NBA seasons, Ayton has consistently averaged at least 10 points and 10 rebounds, putting him in an impressive group alongside players like Dwight Howard, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Rudy Gobert, and Nikola Vucevic.

Ayton, a 2018–19 all-rookie team selection, played five seasons with the Phoenix Suns before being traded to Portland. Injuries limited him to 40 games last season and 95 games over the previous two years.
