Musetti Advances to French Open Quarterfinals

PARIS: Lorenzo Musetti of Italy triumphed over Holger Rune with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday, securing his place in the French Open quarterfinals.

Musetti initially led the first set 5-4 but faced a break. He then seized another opportunity, successfully converting it to claim the set.

Rune responded in the second set, but the Italian maintained composure, clinching the subsequent two sets to win the match.

Musetti acknowledged his adversary, noting he needed to elevate his performance due to Rune’s skill.

Musetti’s Remarks
  • “It’s incredible; I was envisioning a performance like this last night. I had to improve my game because Holger is an excellent player,” Musetti stated.
  • “I gave it my best, and I’m truly proud of my efforts,” he further commented.

Musetti becomes the tenth Italian player to reach the Roland Garros quarterfinals during the Open Era. He is scheduled to compete against Frances Tiafoe, who previously defeated Daniel Altmaier of Germany in the fourth round.

Zheng Qinwen Extends Winning Streak

In another match, Zheng Qinwen defeated Liudmila Samsonova 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 in the fourth round, marking her tenth consecutive victory at the French Open.

This win holds significance for the Olympic gold medalist as she aims for her first Grand Slam title.

Zheng clarified that she doesn’t view herself as a defending champion, despite her prior gold medal win at the same venue.

Zheng’s Perspective
  • “It’s a different scenario, as a Grand Slam requires seven matches, while the Olympic Games requires six matches to secure a gold medal,” Qinwen explained.
  • “I don’t really see myself as the defending champion. Even though I’ve reached the quarter-final, I still think I have a way to go, so I intend to remain composed and focus on each match,” she added.

Zheng is set to face Aryna Sabalenka, the world number one, in the quarterfinals.
