Messi Anticipated to Debut in 2025 MLS All-Star Game

Lionel Messi is projected to participate for the first time in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game held in Austin, according to recent international reports.

The renowned Argentine player, together with his Inter Miami colleague Jordi Alba, was conspicuously missing from the MLS team roster for Wednesday’s exhibition game against Liga MX All-Stars from Mexico.

Based on reports, neither player has formally declared their intention to pass on the game, which casts doubt on whether they will play.

Messi became a member of Inter Miami, an MLS club, in 2023. His most successful season to date has been in 2024, when he has played in 22 games, scored 21 goals, and recorded 11 assists, solidifying his position as the league’s most recognizable player.

Notably, if Messi and Alba decide to miss the All-Star Game without a valid reason related to injury, they risk facing disciplinary measures, which could include Inter Miami being suspended for one game in their next league match against FC Cincinnati.

Austin FC and MLS All-Star head coach Nico Estevez acknowledged that the potential presence of Messi remains a central topic of discussion for the league and its supporters.

He conveyed his optimism that the celebrated seven-time Ballon d’Or recipient would grace the distinguished occasion with his presence.

Estevez stated, “The league and his club are better suited to address questions about Leo. I just train and manage the players that are provided to me. But I remain hopeful. It benefits everyone to have the best player in history present. I’m optimistic as always, so why not? I’m hoping he can be present.”

In their most recent three All-Star encounters with Liga MX, the MLS has come out on top twice; however, the Mexican team secured a commanding 4-1 victory in the previous year’s contest.
