Chelsea Faces Injury Concerns and FA Charges
Chelsea has been dealt a significant setback as forward Liam Delap’s hamstring injury has worsened, potentially sidelining him until December.
Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for 30 million pounds ($41 million) in June, sustained the injury during a match against Fulham prior to the international break. Initially projected to be out for six to eight weeks, his recovery period is now expected to be longer.
Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, stated on Friday, before their Premier League match against Brentford, that Delap is anticipated to be out for approximately 10 to 12 weeks. “It’s around 10 to 12 weeks,” Maresca informed reporters.
Palmer’s Return and Garnacho’s Fitness
On a positive note, Maresca announced that Cole Palmer, who had been sidelined from the England squad due to a groin injury, has resumed training and is likely to participate in the Brentford game. “Cole joined yesterday’s session for the first time, although not the entire session,” the coach mentioned.
“We have another session this afternoon, and we will assess him to determine his availability for tomorrow. If he is fit, we will need to manage him carefully due to the number of matches.”
Additionally, Alejandro Garnacho, a new addition from Manchester United, is yet to make his debut for Chelsea due to a lack of match fitness. Maresca explained that the Argentine winger is not yet at 100% fitness, which has prevented him from playing.
“He is progressing well. He still needs to work because he arrived not fully fit,” Maresca noted. “He is training well, and we will see. Hopefully, we can give him some playing time soon.”
FA Charges Against Chelsea
Chelsea has been formally accused by the Football Association (FA) with 74 charges on Thursday following accusations of rule breaches regarding football agents, intermediaries, and third-party investments in players. The FA has set a deadline of September 19 for Chelsea to respond to the charges.
Maresca expressed confidence that the case would not negatively impact the team’s morale. “I don’t believe the players are overly concerned about the situation,” he stated.
“The club has assured me that they are satisfied with the process. Personally, I have nothing more to add. I honestly have no idea about the matter and prefer to focus on aspects within my control, such as on-field performance.”
