Lennox Lewis Supports Daniel Dubois Ahead of Rematch
Former British-Canadian professional boxer Lennox Lewis has voiced his support for Daniel Dubois as he prepares to face Oleksandr Usyk in their anticipated rematch, slated for July 19 at Wembley Stadium in London.
Lewis remains the most recent British boxer to achieve undisputed champion status, a feat he accomplished back in 1999. Usyk succeeded him, securing the WBC title in May 2024 against Tyson Fury, adding it to his existing WBO, WBA, and IBF titles.
Usyk, having relinquished the IBF title for the rematch with Fury, which he also prevailed in, now seeks to reclaim it against Dubois.
In a recent interview, Lewis addressed Dubois’ prospects in the upcoming rematch, expressing confidence in the British fighter’s chances, stating, “I’m thinking he’s ready. He’s been through the trials and tribulations… He’s going to do it.”
“He’s the king slayer. He’s got the power. He’s been there before. He was just there, he knocked the guy down, so he knows what he needs to do. It would be great for him to do it, another man from Great Britain,” Lewis commented.
“It’s not an easy task, but he’s definitely the man that can go through with it. He’s done the work. He’s gone through the pedigree. He’s a certified world champion and I think he has big hopes on doing it. He’s going to do it,” he further stated.
Usyk and Dubois initially clashed in August 2023, a bout that saw Usyk emerge victorious with a ninth-round knockout in Poland. Dubois was dropped twice during the fight, but the match was controversial due to a punch on Usyk that was deemed a low blow by officials.
