Labuschagne to Rejoin Glamorgan for County Championship Matches
Australian batter Marnus Labuschagne is poised to return to Glamorgan for a pair of vital County Championship games against Northamptonshire and Middlesex later in May. This move is expected to significantly bolster the Welsh county’s lineup.
The Australian Test star will be back with Glamorgan for a brief period, marking his sixth season with the club. His return precedes the World Test Championship final against South Africa, which is slated to commence at Lord’s on June 11, 2025.
The 30-year-old, who has featured in 57 Tests for Australia, has had limited availability for Glamorgan recently due to international duties and paternity leave.
Nevertheless, his return to the county arrives at an opportune moment, as the team aims to make a significant impact in the County Championship.
Labuschagne boasts an impressive track record in county cricket, having notched 10 centuries and 13 fifties in just 30 four-day appearances for Glamorgan since his breakthrough 2019 season. This fruitful period played a key role in setting the stage for his subsequent Ashes performances.
Renowned for his top-order batting prowess, Labuschagne has also contributed with his leg-spin bowling, demonstrating his versatility on the field.
During Labuschagne’s stint, Glamorgan will have the option to field three overseas players, including South African veteran Colin Ingram and Sri Lankan fast bowler Asitha Fernando, who has struggled to find his form since joining the team. The club might rotate these players to strengthen their squad.
Head coach Richard Dawson also revealed plans to reinforce the coaching staff, bringing in former Australian all-rounder Ian Harvey and current Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott in advisory capacities.
Glamorgan, currently positioned at the bottom of Division Two, displayed promising signs of improvement in their recent draw against Derbyshire. The team has three more red-ball matches before turning their attention to the T20 Blast, which kicks off on June 1 against Middlesex.
It’s worth noting that Australia secured its spot in the World Test Championship 2023-25 final by winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, securing a 3-1 series victory in the 2024-25 season.
Meanwhile, South Africa has qualified for the final for the first time, following a commanding 2-0 series victory over Pakistan.
