Nick Kyrgios Hints at Imminent Retirement from Tennis
Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has indicated he may soon retire from professional tennis, according to recent reports.
Since his defeat by Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final, Kyrgios has struggled with a series of injuries affecting his foot, knee, and wrist, limiting him to just four singles matches this season.
Kyrgios secured his first singles victory at the Miami Open in March after his setbacks in 2022, but had to withdraw from the French Open due to ongoing knee problems.
In early June, he announced his withdrawal from Wimbledon and the entire grasscourt season following a minor setback during his injury recovery.
Kyrgios, who has won seven ATP Tour singles titles, mentioned his plan to play this year and then assess his future, suggesting he cannot continue for much longer.
“I don’t anticipate playing tennis for much longer. My body is struggling. I might just stick to UTS… I’ll compete this year, then decide what to do next year,” Kyrgios stated.
“I don’t think I can endure it for much longer. My body finds the daily training and travel particularly challenging, even though playing matches is easier.”
He further noted the intense level of competition and his concerns about maintaining the physical and mental fitness required to compete against top players like Jannik Sinner.
“Currently, I can’t train consistently for two months without injury, which makes it less enjoyable,” he added.
“There are increasingly long rallies, even among the top players. What chance do I have rallying against someone like Sinner? Almost none… The court conditions are slower now.”
In 2022, Nick Kyrgios displayed significant potential, reaching the Wimbledon men’s singles final. He also reached the US Open quarterfinals that year but has only participated in one Grand Slam since.
