Kuldeep Yadav Eyes Comeback in Second Test Against England
BIRMINGHAM: Bolstered by advice from former England captain Kevin Pietersen, left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav is aiming for a significant resurgence in the second Test against England.
With the second match of the ICC World Test Championship series set to occur at Edgbaston, and potential rest for lead fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah due to back concerns, there are growing calls for Kuldeep’s inclusion in the starting lineup.
Kuldeep’s last Test appearance for India was during the home series against New Zealand in October of the previous year, marking over six years since he participated in a red-ball match outside of Asia.
However, the wrist-spinner remains optimistic about making a difference if given the opportunity.
In a conversation with a local Indian media outlet, Kuldeep mentioned a detailed discussion with Pietersen during their time together at Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Insights from Pietersen
Kuldeep stated, “Kevin Petersen was with our team at DC (Delhi Capitals). He shared valuable inputs for the England tour, including fielding positions, pitch conditions, and insights on the batters. We reviewed England’s batting lineup, and he emphasized the mindset needed in England.”
“Pietersen pointed out that spinners often adopt a defensive strategy in England, assuming fast bowlers will dominate and that they will play a supporting role. He urged me to approach the game with an attacking mindset. If I get the chance to bowl 15 to 20 overs, my focus should always be on taking wickets.”
The 30-year-old boasts an impressive Test record, with 56 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 22.16.
While recognized for his limited-overs performances, notably his important contributions to India’s ICC T20 World Cup victory last year and the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year, Kuldeep remains committed to achieving success in red-ball cricket.
Kuldeep added, “Bowling is my expertise. To justify my place in the team in England, I must take wickets. Otherwise, I don’t believe I deserve to play.”
“Regardless of whether I’m playing at home or in England, my priority is to generate revs and drift, as that’s what will get me wickets.”
Notably, India commenced their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025–27 campaign under new captain Shubman Gill with a defeat.
They experienced a five-wicket loss in the opening Test against the hosts in Leeds, who now hold a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
