Konstas Aims to Cement Spot in Australia’s Test Team

BRIDGETOWN: Young Australian opening batsman Sam Konstas has declared his ambition to become a consistent and integral member of the national Test squad.

Speaking with media representatives, the 19-year-old pledged his full commitment to compensate for the absence of seasoned players.

He intends to make a significant contribution and demonstrate his value in the forthcoming Test series against the West Indies, commencing on June 25 in Bridgetown.

Konstas noted that the most challenging aspect of his initial exposure to Test cricket was not the quality of bowling he faced but rather controlling his emotions in front of large audiences, such as the one at the MCG last December.

“The emotional impact of playing in front of such a large crowd during my first Test matches was significant. However, the time off has allowed me to reassess and enhance my skills. I am now hopeful for the chance to start in the next Test,” Konstas stated.

Konstas revealed that keeping a personal journal has become an essential method for him to stay focused and revisit fundamental principles, particularly while touring abroad.

“My diary has been an invaluable tool. It allows me to reflect on past games and revisit my key focus points, especially when I am overseas. It helps me to remain grounded,” he explained.

The young opener also emphasized the crucial advice he has received from experienced players, which has enabled him to manage high-pressure situations on the field.

“I concentrate on regulating my breathing and maintaining open communication with my batting partner to discuss strategies, especially during intense moments when the game dynamic shifts,” Konstas mentioned.

He voiced his resolve to leave a mark and prove his worth in the approaching Test series against the West Indies, starting on June 25 in Bridgetown.

“I consistently seek advice from experienced players like Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steven Smith, observing their approaches to different situations. I feel fortunate to be around them, especially at 19. Representing my country and traveling the world is truly a dream come true.”

Konstas recognized the difficulty of entering and securing a position in Australia’s formidable Test lineup but remains patient and dedicated to capitalizing on any opportunity that arises.

“My main goal is to seize any opportunity that comes my way, given the strength of the team. I am incredibly grateful for that,” he concluded.

Konstas has been confirmed in the starting XI for the first Test in Bridgetown, with selectors recalling him and Josh Inglis to the squad. Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped, and Steven Smith is out due to a dislocated finger.

The three-Test series between the two nations is scheduled to commence on June 25 in Bridgetown. The second Test will be held in St George’s on July 3, and the third Test will begin in Kingston on July 12.
