Khachanov Victorious Over Zverev, Advances to Canadian Open Final
Following his triumph and entry into the Canadian Open 2025 final, Karen Khachanov expressed his belief that Alexander Zverev displayed nervousness during critical junctures, which significantly contributed to Zverev’s defeat.
Khachanov, representing Russia, secured a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (4) victory against Zverev, earning his place in the final. This marks his second final appearance at this level, reminiscent of his title win against Novak Djokovic in Paris-Bercy in 2018.
Khachanov conveyed his excitement about reaching the final, viewing it as another chance to compete in a major event’s ultimate match.
“It definitely feels great. I’m having a good run and another opportunity to play in the final of this significant event. I am super happy and proud to achieve this again,” Khachanov stated.
He added, “There are always statistics regarding Masters 1000s, 500s, or Grand Slams, but I don’t focus too much on them. Although it has been several years, I have achieved other significant results in Grand Slams and other events during this time.”
Khachanov’s Analysis of Zverev’s Defeat
Karen Khachanov attributed Alexander Zverev’s loss to increased nervousness during crucial moments of their face-off.
“When you reach this stage, both players deserve to win. I can’t pinpoint a specific difference,” Khachanov remarked.
He further explained, “Ultimately, it depends on who lands more balls in the court, executes more winners, and makes fewer unforced errors. It boils down to your performance in those critical moments.”
“I was down 3-1 but managed to equalize. Then, he seemed to commit two unforced errors. Perhaps I applied more pressure, causing him to become more nervous and tense. That’s how you navigate these situations.”
The world No. 16 is set to clash with Ben Shelton in the final. Shelton defeated fellow American Taylor Fritz 6-4, 6-3, securing his spot in the most important match of his career against Khachanov.
Khachanov and Shelton have only met once before, with Shelton emerging victorious 6-3, 7-5 in the third round of Indian Wells earlier in 2025.
