Khachanov Advances to Barcelona Open Semi-Finals, Set to Clash with Rune

Karen Khachanov clinched a spot in the Barcelona Open semi-finals on Friday, overcoming Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with a score of 6-4, 7-5 at Pista Rafa Nadal.

The world’s 27th-ranked player showcased remarkable composure during the initial set, maintaining focus and capitalizing on opportunities. He secured the set victory with a commanding forehand that Davidovich Fokina couldn’t return.

Davidovich, a recent Monte Carlo Masters semi-finalist, faced difficulties on the clay. Despite a strong start in the second set, leading 5-2, a series of unforced errors paved the way for Khachanov to secure the set and the match.

Davidovich’s frustration was palpable, marked by arguments with the umpire and several mistakes. The match also featured some intense exchanges between the two competitors.

“In the heat of competition, players can become frustrated,” Khachanov commented post-match.

“Emotions and nerves run high. We had a few tense games. Ultimately, I aim to compete fairly, and we resolved any issues. I harbor no ill will towards him. We exchanged words, but we shook hands afterward, and it’s all in the past,” he stated.

Khachanov’s path to the semi-finals included a hard-fought victory against Britain’s Cameron Norrie, with scores of 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-3. He then defeated Jaume Munar, another Spanish player, 7-5, 6-4, to progress to the quarter-finals.

This semi-final appearance marks Khachanov’s first on clay since 2022, when he reached the final four at the Belgrade Open. Next, he will compete against Holger Rune of Denmark, the world number 13, who defeated Casper Ruud in his quarter-final match.
