Tsarukyan Favored for Potential Title Showdown with Topuria
UFC icon Khabib Nurmagomedov voiced his support for Arman Tsarukyan in a hypothetical Octagon clash against Ilia Topuria, according to recent reports.
Topuria has ascended to prominence in mixed martial arts, notably after securing a knockout victory over Charles Oliveira in June to claim the lightweight title.
The undefeated lightweight champion, boasting a flawless 17-0 professional record, transitioned from featherweight following a string of impressive wins against contenders like Josh Emmett and Bryce Mitchell.
This victory also places Topuria among an distinguished group of fighters who have captured UFC titles across multiple weight classes.
Tsarukyan is currently the leading contender to challenge Topuria, also known as ‘El Matador,’ and is riding a four-fight win streak in the UFC.
In a recent interview, Khabib predicted a decisive win for Arman against Topuria, emphasizing the Armenian fighter’s prowess against strikers.
“I don’t think Topuria stands a chance. Arman is too skilled at distance against strikers. He manages range effectively and utilizes his kicks well. Furthermore, Arman has shown considerable improvement,” Khabib stated.
“There is enough footage available for detailed study and analysis. Had they fought three years prior, he might have been less cautious. However, the dangers Topuria presents are now very apparent.”
Khabib also noted Tsarukyan’s height and weight advantage over Ilia, suggesting he will be the physically larger competitor on fight night.
“I’d estimate the odds at 80%-20% in Arman’s favor. He’s nearly 10 centimeters taller, if I recall correctly. He also has a weight advantage and will be the bigger fighter on the night… It’s a compelling matchup. The UFC is being careful, as they didn’t want to rush him into a fight with Topuria too soon. Currently, Topuria has more stardom than Arman,” Khabib concluded.
