Trump Achieves Milestone, Setting Up Showdown with Stevens

Judd Trump, the world’s top-ranked player, showcased exceptional form in China, achieving his ninth career 147 maximum break. This feat occurred during his 5-2 victory over Ng On-yee at the Xi’an Grand Prix on Tuesday.

Against On-yee, a distinguished three-time world champion from Hong Kong, Trump demonstrated his skill. He rallied with impressive breaks of 100, 94, and the conclusive 147, securing a second-round encounter with Matthew Stevens of Wales.

However, the match began differently, with Ng capturing the initial frame with a solid 74-point break.

Reflecting on his maximum break, Trump mentioned that numerous players have accomplished 147s, and it feels significant to achieve it in China.

“It’s been some time since my last one. Many others have been making 147s and making it seem effortless. I felt it was my turn. Achieving one in China was special, given the excellent atmosphere,” expressed Trump.

With a current count of 12 maximum breaks in the 2025 season, the record of 15 from the 2024–25 campaign is drawing closer.

He further noted his surprise at the increased frequency of 147 breaks, attributing it to the rising standards within the sport.

“It’s somewhat surprising how frequently everyone is making them. I believe the overall standard of play has improved. It appears everyone is aiming for maximums now,” he added.

In an all-Chinese match, Zhao Xintong, the reigning world champion, triumphed over Wang Xinbo with a score of 5-2 in the other main event.

Jak Jones of Wales secured a victory against his fellow countryman Dylan Emery by the same margin, while Australian Neil Robertson comfortably defeated Irish teenager Leone Crowley 5-1.

Following Marco Fu’s withdrawal, defending champion Kyren Wilson advanced effortlessly.
