Jordi Alba Announces Retirement
Former Spanish international defender Jordi Alba, currently with Inter Miami, declared his retirement from professional football on Tuesday, set to take effect at the close of the current Major League Soccer season.
Alba, who earned 93 international appearances for Spain from 2011 to 2023 and was a vital component of Barcelona’s squad during that same time, communicated his decision through an Instagram statement.
“The moment to conclude a truly significant chapter of my life has arrived. I have chosen to end my professional football career at the end of this season,” Alba expressed in his message.
“I believe I’ve navigated this journey with every bit of passion within me, and now the timing is right to begin a new chapter, concluding the previous one with the most positive sentiment.
“Today, I bring this chapter to a close, knowing I’ve given my all. Football has been and always will be a crucial part of my existence. Thank you, football, for everything.”
Jordi Alba, a naturally gifted attacking fullback, became a member of Inter Miami in 2023, rejoining former Barcelona colleagues Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets.
Although Alba initially intended to play through the 2027 season, he altered his decision and concluded a career that featured six La Liga titles with Barcelona, as well as a Champions League victory. Furthermore, he played a key role in the Spain team’s triumph at the 2012 European Championship.
