Sinner Advances at Wimbledon with Straight-Sets Victory

LONDON: Jannik Sinner, currently ranked world number one, commenced his Wimbledon campaign successfully, overcoming fellow Italian Luca Nardi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-0, on Tuesday.

Sinner, a three-time major titleholder, who recently faced defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, showcased his dominance against Nardi, who is ranked 95th globally.

Nardi, aged 21, presented a challenge in the initial set; however, Sinner managed to secure it.

Building on his momentum, Sinner surged ahead in the second set, establishing a 3-0 advantage and subsequently winning the set.

Nardi struggled to counter Sinner’s exceptional performance, as Sinner asserted command in the final set, securing an early break and two additional breaks before sealing the match with a service winner.

Reflecting on his experience at the French Open, Sinner remarked that Wimbledon represents a fresh start, expressing his enthusiasm for the tournament.

Sinner’s Quote:

“A new competition brings new opportunities and challenges,” Sinner stated. “Focusing on one opponent at a time, I aim to maintain my progress and relish playing here.”

“The enjoyment of playing on these courts is unparalleled. I am delighted to be here and anticipate what lies ahead.”

Sinner, who has consistently reached at least the quarter-finals at Wimbledon for the past three years, dictated the match with 28 winners compared to 17 unforced errors.

He displayed superior strength, speed, and ball-striking ability, complemented by improved serving. The intense heat on Court One posed a challenge for Sinner as the heatwave persisted. However, the application of ice-packed towels enabled the world number one to maintain composure.
