Sinner, Gauff, and Zverev Advance to French Open Quarterfinals

PARIS: Jannik Sinner delivered a dominant performance to secure his place in the French Open quarterfinals, defeating Andrey Rublev of Russia with a score of 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 at Philippe-Chatrier on Monday.

Sinner concluded the match in slightly over two hours, seizing the first set after establishing a commanding 5-0 advantage. While Rublev managed to secure some games in the subsequent sets, Sinner, the world number one, effectively closed out the match.

Sinner, a three-time Grand Slam champion who recently returned to professional tennis at the Italian Open in Rome following a three-month suspension, is set to compete against Alexander Bublik on Wednesday. Bublik secured his spot by defeating Jack Draper of Britain in the fourth round on Monday with a score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff of the United States progressed to the French Open quarterfinals, achieving a straight-sets victory against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Gauff triumphed over Alexandrova, the 20th seed from Russia, with a score of 6-0, 7-5. This win sets up an all-American quarterfinal clash with Madison Keys, who emerged victorious against Hailey Baptiste with a score of 6-3, 7-5.

Gauff commented on her victory, acknowledging Alexandrova’s improved performance in the second set and expressing her fondness for the clay court surface.

“I felt I maintained a high level of play throughout the match. She elevated her game in the second set. But I believe my overall performance was strong,” Gauff stated.

“I feel agile on clay, comfortable with sliding and navigating the surface. It’s definitely the most physically demanding surface, and I feel I excel in that aspect,” she added.

In addition, Alexander Zverev of Germany also advanced to the quarterfinals after his opponent, Tallon Griekspoor, retired from the match on Monday.

Zverev, currently ranked number three globally, was leading with a score of 6-4, 3-0 when his Dutch opponent conceded due to an apparent abdominal injury.

Zverev is slated to face Serbian star Novak Djokovic on Wednesday.
