Jamie Overton Steps Back from Red-Ball Cricket
England’s bowling all-rounder, Jamie Overton, revealed on Monday that he is taking an indefinite break from red-ball cricket. Consequently, he will be absent from the upcoming away Ashes series against Australia, which is slated to begin on November 21.
Overton has participated in 99 first-class matches but has only played in two Test matches for England. His most recent appearance was the fifth and final match of the series against India in July-August, with his initial Test in 2022 versus New Zealand.
Despite limited appearances for England’s Test side, the 31-year-old was considered a potential squad member for this year’s Ashes, primarily due to his ability to bowl at speeds close to 90mph.
However, in an interview, Overton conveyed his unexpected decision, explaining that he could no longer fully commit to all three formats, citing both physical and mental strain.
“After much consideration, I’ve resolved to take an indefinite hiatus from red-ball cricket,” Overton stated.
“I am grateful to have participated in 99 first-class matches, including a couple of Test matches for England. First-class cricket has laid the groundwork for my professional career and paved the way for various opportunities. It’s where I honed my skills, which fueled my ambitions for a long time.
“However, given the current demands of cricket throughout the year, it is no longer viable to fully dedicate myself to all formats, both physically and mentally. Looking ahead, my focus will be on white-ball cricket, and I will remain dedicated to performing at the highest level for as long as possible.”
