Isak Comments on Newcastle Exit Following £125 Million Liverpool Transfer

Alexander Isak, Liverpool’s latest acquisition, has addressed Newcastle United’s public statement issued shortly after his high-profile transfer to the Reds.

Isak finalized a long-term agreement with Liverpool on the transfer deadline, concluding a protracted summer of speculation. The Magpies reportedly accepted a £125 million ($170 million) offer for the Swedish international on September 1, having previously turned down a bid of £110 million, including various add-ons, earlier in the month.

Prior to the transfer, Alexander Isak was notably absent from Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia, officially due to a ‘minor thigh injury.’ He subsequently did not participate in any matches for the Magpies during the current season. Reports indicated that he was training independently amid Liverpool’s interest. Following the initial rejection of Liverpool’s bid, Isak reportedly declined to rejoin the Newcastle squad and released a statement citing ‘broken promises’ by the club and stating that their ‘relationship can’t continue’.

In response, Newcastle stated that “no commitment had ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer”.

Speaking to the press following Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Kosovo in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, Isak addressed the statement released by Newcastle. He suggested that a complete understanding of the situation is lacking in some quarters, though he added that this was a matter for another time. He also expressed his satisfaction at being able to return to competitive football after the uncertainties of the transfer period.

“It’s positive that everything was resolved before joining the squad, allowing me to focus on playing again. This situation was relatively new to me, but you always learn and mature mentally even when you’re not on the field. Things have worked out,” Isak commented.

“It’s evident that not everyone is fully informed, but that’s a discussion for another day. At the moment, the focus is on the disappointment from this match and how it unfolded. However, I also feel optimistic about joining my new club.”

The Swedish player, who joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £60 million, recorded 27 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions last season.
