Messi’s Assist Leads Inter Miami to Victory
FORT LAUDERDALE: Lionel Messi delivered two assists, propelling Inter Miami to a 2-1 triumph over Atlas in their Leagues Cup group-stage opener at Chase Stadium on Wednesday.
Miami clinched the win in the match’s final moments when Messi passed to Marcelo Weigandt, who struck the ball into the net in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Atlas had previously tied the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute, with Jose Lozano scoring from close range with a left-footed shot.
Inter Miami took the lead in the 57th minute when Sergio Busquets linked up with Messi, who then teed up Telasco Segovia to score into the unguarded net.
Messi commented on the conditions, stating that the heat made the match difficult, and that he was removed from the lineup the previous game. He feels that more playing time helps him.
He stated that he improves with more playing time and that the win was most important, irrespective of his playing status.
“The conditions were really difficult due to the heat, compounded by my absence the other day. Though the rest may appear beneficial, it’s detrimental as I thrive on competition,” Messi stated post-match.
“The more I play, the better I feel physically and the more rhythm I find. They disallowed me from competing the other day, which I felt during the first half, but what’s important is that we emerged victorious.”
