Sinner Deals With Elbow Discomfort During Tournament

Jannik Sinner’s coach, Simone Vagnozzi, has revealed that the tennis star is not in peak physical condition. However, he noted that Sinner is effectively managing the situation by concentrating on his capabilities.

Sinner is scheduled to compete against Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final on Sunday. This follows an MRI scan that Sinner underwent after experiencing elbow discomfort during his round of 16 match against Grigor Dimitrov. Dimitrov had to withdraw from the match with the score at 6-3, 7-5, 2-2 due to a pectoral muscle injury.

Sinner completed his subsequent matches, including victories over Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic, while using a strap and arm sleeve. However, the injury did not appear to impede his performance.

Vagnozzi confirmed that Sinner underwent an MRI and several tests. While not at 100%, Sinner is reportedly handling the situation well by focusing on what he can control.

“We’re managing it, and it’s improving each day,” Vagnozzi stated.

He added, “During a match, it’s challenging to fully understand what’s happening. Following the MRI and further testing, he’s managing it effectively and maintaining his focus.”

When asked about Sinner’s potential use of painkillers, Vagnozzi declined to comment.

Sinner’s most recent encounter with Alcaraz resulted in a defeat at the French Open final a month prior.

Alcaraz currently holds an 8-4 advantage in their head-to-head record, having won their last five meetings. Despite this, Vagnozzi anticipates a balanced 50-50 match in the Wimbledon final.

“Matches between Sinner and Alcaraz are now very close,” he observed. “As seen in Paris, the outcome was determined by a few critical points, and a similar scenario is expected.”

He further explained, “The playing styles are somewhat different here due to the quicker surface, which makes defense more challenging, serve more impactful and movement more difficult.”

“I still believe the match will be evenly contested. The key will be who can capitalize on opportunities and perform better on the day.”
