Deepti Sharma Shines as India Secures Victory in First ODI Against England
SOUTHAMPTON: India’s women’s cricket team initiated the One-Day International (ODI) series against England with a compelling four-wicket triumph at Southampton on Wednesday, propelled by Deepti Sharma’s steady half-century and the effective bowling efforts of Sneh Rana and Kranti Goud.
England, having won the toss and elected to bat, managed to set a target of 258/6 in their allotted 50 overs.
The Indian squad successfully pursued the score, achieving 259/6 in 48.2 overs, thus taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
England’s Innings
England’s initial batters established a firm base, with Sophia Dunkley showcasing a remarkable performance, scoring 83 runs from 92 deliveries, punctuated by nine boundaries.
Alice Davidson-Richards offered valuable assistance with 53 runs off 73 balls, complemented by captain Nat Sciver-Brunt’s contribution of 41 runs from 52 balls.
The Indian bowling attack maintained pressure throughout. Sneh Rana, an off-spinner, recorded impressive stats of 2/31 across her 10 overs, while Kranti Goud secured 2/55 in her nine overs. Amanjot Kaur and Shree Charani each claimed one wicket.
India’s Chase
During India’s turn at bat, Deepti Sharma played a pivotal role, scoring a match-deciding 62 runs from 64 balls, which included three boundaries and a six.
Jemimah Rodrigues provided considerable support, adding 48 runs off 54 balls, hitting five fours.
Earlier, opener Pratika Rawal set the stage with 36 runs off 51 balls. Contributions from Smriti Mandhana (28), Harleen Deol (27), and Amanjot Kaur (20) ensured India stayed on track.
Despite Charlie Dean’s 2/52, England’s bowling unit couldn’t halt India’s march to victory. Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone, and Lauren Filer each took one wicket.
Deepti Sharma was awarded Player of the Match for her significant half-century and crucial stability in the middle order.
The subsequent match in this ODI series is scheduled for Saturday at Lord’s.
