India Cuts Deficit to 137 Runs Against England
MANCHESTER: An impressive unbroken partnership of 174 runs between Shubman Gill and KL Rahul has significantly reduced India’s trail to 137 runs on the fourth day of the Test match against England at Old Trafford on Saturday.
India concluded day four at 174/2, with Rahul (87*) and Gill (78*) at the crease.
The duo exhibited composure and skill after Chris Woakes removed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in a remarkable first over, leaving India at 0/2.
Rahul and Gill will aim to reach centuries as they continue India’s second innings on the last day. The visiting team requires another 137 runs to level the scores.
Earlier, England commenced their first innings at 544/7 with Ben Stokes (77*) and Liam Dawson (21*).
They managed to add only 19 runs to their overnight score before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Dawson in the fifth over. The all-rounder contributed 26 runs from 65 balls, including three boundaries.
Stokes then partnered with Brydon Carse, and together they added 93 runs for the ninth wicket, testing the patience of the Indian bowlers.
Ravindra Jadeja finally broke the partnership, dismissing Stokes in the 156th over after he scored 141 runs from 198 deliveries, which included 11 fours and three sixes.
Jadeja struck again in his subsequent over, removing Carse, who scored 47 runs off 54 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes.
Jadeja was the most successful bowler for India, taking four wickets for 143 runs in 37.1 overs. Washington Sundar and Bumrah claimed two wickets each, while Anshul Kamboj and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each.
