Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has hit an early roadblock as opening batter Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out due to an oblique muscle injury. The left-handed opener sustained the injury while fielding against New Zealand in Pakistan’s opening match of the tournament in Karachi. Despite attempting to continue after an initial assessment, Fakhar was forced off the field, and subsequent scans confirmed the extent of his injury.

In response, the ICC Event Technical Committee has approved Imam-ul-Haq as his official replacement in the squad. Imam, who was already part of Pakistan Shaheens, recently showcased top form with a stellar 98-run knock in a practice game against South Africa. His inclusion is expected to add depth and stability to Pakistan’s batting lineup ahead of their highly anticipated match against India on February 23 in Dubai.

A Major Setback for Pakistan

Fakhar Zaman’s absence is a significant blow to Pakistan, given his ability to provide explosive starts at the top of the order. His departure comes at a crucial juncture, with Pakistan looking to bounce back after their 60-run defeat to New Zealand. Chasing a target of 321, Pakistan managed only 260 runs despite notable contributions from Babar Azam (64 off 90 balls) and Khushdil Shah (69 off 49 balls).

New Zealand’s innings was dominated by centuries from Will Young and Tom Latham, while Glenn Phillips played a quickfire 61 off 39 balls to solidify their total. Pakistan’s bowling attack, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf, struggled to contain New Zealand’s batting onslaught.

Imam-ul-Haq’s Inclusion – A Strategic Move

Imam-ul-Haq’s selection brings experience and consistency to Pakistan’s top order. The left-handed batter has been a regular part of Pakistan’s ODI squad, known for his ability to build innings and anchor the batting lineup. With an average of over 50 in ODIs, Imam’s presence will be crucial in stabilizing Pakistan’s chase in high-pressure situations.

Pakistan’s next match against India is a must-win encounter to keep their semi-final hopes alive. With a packed stadium and millions of fans watching worldwide, Imam-ul-Haq has the perfect opportunity to make an impact on the biggest stage.
