Imad Wasim Comments on Sikandar Raza’s Return to Lahore Qalandars
Former Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim recently shared his thoughts on Zimbabwean star Sikandar Raza’s unexpected return to the Lahore Qalandars squad. Raza’s return occurred just before the toss in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 final at Gaddafi Stadium, creating quite a buzz.
Raza had previously taken leave from the Qalandars to play for Zimbabwe in their Test match against England in Nottingham. This match wrapped up late Saturday night, casting doubt on whether he’d be available for the PSL final.
However, Raza made it back in time, rejoining his Lahore Qalandars teammates just moments before the toss. He was ready to compete against the Quetta Gladiators in the championship match.
During an interview, Imad Wasim was asked to describe Sikandar Raza briefly. He responded by offering his perspective on the financial realities and physical demands of franchise cricket.
Imad Wasim’s Perspective
“Like Shoaib Akhtar said, money can influence decisions,” Imad commented.
“If a player is compensated well, they will participate. I also travel frequently. Sometimes, a match concludes, and the very next day, you’re playing again. I’ve experienced 24-hour travel stretches directly into a game. So, yes, financial incentives can facilitate various scenarios,” Imad added.
Despite his pragmatic view on the business aspect of the sport, the former Karachi Kings captain acknowledged Raza’s consistent performance and professionalism over the years.
Praise for Raza’s Performance
“Sikandar Raza is an exceptional player who has consistently performed well globally in recent years. He even secured the ILT20 final victory for his team. He’s an excellent person and a true team player. Having played with and against him, I can attest to his recent performances, which undoubtedly qualify him as a match-winner,” he stated.
The Lahore Qalandars, led by Shaheen Afridi, secured the PSL 10 title with a thrilling six-wicket victory over the Quetta Gladiators, marking their third championship in the tournament’s history.
Chasing a challenging target of 202 runs, Lahore initiated their innings strongly, with opener Mohammad Naeem setting an aggressive pace.
Naeem contributed a rapid 47 off 27 balls, hitting one four and six sixes before being dismissed by Faheem Ashraf.
Abdullah Shafique added a dynamic 41 off 28 balls, including four boundaries and a six, before being dismissed by Usman Tariq, leaving Lahore at 115/3 in 12.3 overs.
As the pressure intensified and the required run rate increased, Thisara Perera and Bhanuka Rajapaksa faced difficulties.
However, Sikandar Raza stepped up, hitting consecutive boundaries off Mohammad Amir to shift the momentum. Perera also played a crucial role, achieving a swift half-century off just 28 balls.
With 13 runs needed in the final over, Raza maintained composure, hitting a four and a six to secure the win with one ball remaining.
For the Quetta Gladiators, Hasan Nawaz stood out, scoring an impressive 76 off 43 balls, which included eight fours and four sixes.
