Swiatek’s Confidence Hinges on Early French Open Rounds, Says Tournament Director

Amelie Mauresmo, the French Open Tournament Director, believes that the initial stages of the competition will be critical for defending champion Iga Swiatek to regain her confidence.

Swiatek has experienced a challenging clay season, securing only six victories on this surface thus far. She faced defeat in the quarter-final of the Stuttgart Open against Jelena Ostapenko and was overcome by Coco Gauff in the semi-final of the Madrid Open.

The Polish player also experienced an abrupt exit in Rome, failing to retain her title after a loss to Danielle Collins in the third round.

Mauresmo took note of Swiatek’s early arrival in Paris, implying that the French Open holds a special significance for the athlete. The former world number one speculated that Swiatek arrived ahead of schedule to fully absorb the distinctive atmosphere of Roland Garros.

“She arrived exceptionally early this year, despite a limited number of wins on clay this season,” Mauresmo stated. “I believe she aims to truly immerse herself in the ambiance of this centre court—a court she cherishes, possibly her most beloved court worldwide.”

“It is encouraging to see her arrive so early. I believe this marks one of the first instances where we observe such a prominent player arriving so far in advance of the tournament,” she added.

Mauresmo emphasized that the preliminary rounds will be vital for Swiatek to cultivate momentum and restore her self-assurance.

“I anticipate that the commencement of the tournament will undoubtedly be key in re-establishing this confidence. She requires these initial matches—one, two, or three—to establish rhythm and elevate her confidence,” he stated.

“However, Iga remains a formidable presence on this court. She will invariably pose a challenge to any opponent she encounters,” he concluded.
