Swiatek Set to Clash with Sabalenka in Semi-Final Showdown

PARIS: At Court Philippe-Chatrier on Tuesday, defending champion Iga Swiatek showcased her dominance by defeating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, securing her place in the French Open semi-final.

This triumph significantly enhances Swiatek’s bid to become the first woman in the Open Era to clinch four successive titles in Paris, a feat not achieved since 1968.

The Grand Slam victor exhibited resilience by saving all three break points she faced in the initial set and capitalizing on Svitolina’s errors, breaking her in the final two service games.

The second set saw a tighter contest, with Svitolina managing to break Swiatek’s serve for the first time, gaining a 3-1 advantage.

However, Swiatek swiftly responded, breaking back immediately after Svitolina faltered, sending a forehand return into the net.

Looking ahead, the Polish player is preparing to face Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka, the tournament’s top seed, in what promises to be a compelling semi-final at the French Open.

Expressing her thoughts on the victory, Swiatek acknowledged that she could have approached the second set with greater intensity.

She further commented that the upcoming match against Sabalenka would be a formidable challenge, describing it as one of the toughest encounters she could face.

“I should have had better intensity in the beginning of the second set,” Swiatek stated.

“When I saw my intensity go low I got it high again. I am happy I did it at the end of the set.

“Facing Aryna always presents a challenge. Her capabilities shine on any surface. I have to bring my best, display courage in my shots, and seize opportunities. She is enjoying a remarkable season.

“I won’t deny it; it will be a demanding match, but I am enthusiastic about the challenge ahead.”
