Swiatek Advances to Face Bejlek or Cristian in Round Three

Iga Swiatek of Poland, a four-time champion, showcased her dominance by defeating Emma Raducanu of Great Britain in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, during their second-round match at the French Open on Wednesday. This victory extends Swiatek’s impressive winning streak in Paris to 23 matches.

Swiatek, currently ranked number five globally, is aiming to become the first woman in the modern era since 1968 to secure four successive French Open titles. She has now triumphed over the 2021 U.S. Open champion in all five of their encounters, each win achieved in straight sets.

Her next opponent will be either Sara Bejlek from the Czech Republic or Jaqueline Cristian representing Romania.

“I simply focused on executing my game plan,” Swiatek stated. “I felt comfortable on the court and believed I could implement my strategies, adapting to the windy conditions. I’m pleased with my performance and advancement.”

When questioned about the source of her success on the Parisian clay, she responded, “Probably the top spin that I play. I cherish playing here. This venue inspires me, pushing me to work harder. I am prepared to compete and give my all.”

Raducanu, aged 22, achieved her best result this season with a quarter-final appearance in Miami. She briefly matched Swiatek’s pace initially, capitalizing on eight unforced errors made by the Polish player in the first three games.

However, Swiatek quickly regained her composure, securing two breaks against the Briton to claim the first set decisively.

Swiatek, who has yet to secure a title this season, broke her opponent’s serve early in the second set. Raducanu, ranked 41st, created three break opportunities while trailing 2-1 but was unable to convert them.

Under constant pressure from her opponent and still recovering from an illness earlier in the week, Raducanu struggled. She succumbed in the last three consecutive games as Swiatek sealed the victory with a remarkable backhand down the line on her second match point.
