Swiatek Advances to Quarterfinals After Overcoming Rybakina
PARIS: Iga Swiatek demonstrated resilience by rebounding from an initial set deficit to secure a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory against Elena Rybakina, the 12th seed, in the French Open. The match took place at Philippe-Chatrier on Sunday, propelling Swiatek into the quarterfinals.
Rybakina began the match with dominance, swiftly establishing a 5-0 lead within the first 20 minutes and clinching the first set decisively.
The tennis player from Kazakhstan also took an early 2-0 lead in the second set; however, Swiatek responded emphatically, claiming the second set and ultimately winning the match by securing the third.
Swiatek acknowledged Rybakina’s skill, commenting that she had nearly lost all optimism due to the Kazakhstani player’s high level of play.
Swiatek’s Comments
“I realized I needed to adjust my approach to get back into contention, but with her exceptional performance, I felt my chances were slim,” Swiatek stated.
Swiatek is scheduled to compete against Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Svitolina previously triumphed over Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the round of 16.
Tommy Paul Reaches Quarterfinals
Concurrently, Tommy Paul achieved a straight-sets victory against Alexei Popyrin of Australia with scores of 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at Court Suzanne Lenglen. This fourth-round victory on Sunday marks Paul as the first American male player to reach the French Open quarterfinals since Andre Agassi in 2003.
Paul commented on his success, noting his appreciation for the swift victory after several protracted matches.
Paul’s Remarks
“I am very pleased with the straight-sets outcome. Considering the lengthy matches I’ve been playing, this win is particularly satisfying,” Paul mentioned.
“My support team has been instrumental in preparing me for each match, and undoubtedly, shorter matches like this are beneficial,” he added.
In the upcoming quarter-finals, Paul will face either Ben Shelton or Carlos Alcaraz.
