Shubman Gill Honored as ICC Men’s Player of the Month

DUBAI: Following his remarkable performances in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has declared Indian Test captain Shubman Gill as the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2025.

The 25-year-old prevailed over England captain Ben Stokes and South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder to receive the award after a brilliant month with the bat.

He accumulated 567 runs in three Test matches in July, maintaining an impressive average of 94.50, which included a double century and two centuries across six innings.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as the ICC Player of the Month for July,” Gill stated.

“This recognition is especially meaningful as it acknowledges my performances during my inaugural Test series as captain.

“The double century in Birmingham is certainly a moment I will always cherish and will stand out as a highlight of my tour in England.

“The Test series against England provided a valuable learning experience for me as a captain, and we saw outstanding performances from both teams, which I believe players from both sides will remember fondly.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the jury for selecting me for this award, as well as to my teammates who supported me throughout this thrilling series. I am eager to maintain my form in the upcoming season and achieve further success for my country.”

Gill is now the first male player to secure the ICC Player of the Month award on four separate occasions, a milestone previously attained only by Australia’s Ash Gardner and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews in women’s cricket.

A highlight was India’s historic victory at Edgbaston, where he posted an impressive 269 in the first innings after entering the game at 95/2, followed by 161 in the second innings, contributing to a 336-run victory.

His total of 430 runs in the match is the second-highest in Test history, trailing only Graham Gooch’s 456.

During the Edgbaston performance, Gill achieved several milestones, becoming the first Indian captain to score a Test double century on English soil and the second Indian captain to achieve the feat outside India, after Virat Kohli in 2016 in the West Indies.

He surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s score of 221 from 1979 for the highest Test score by an Indian in England, and exceeded Sachin Tendulkar’s 21-year-old record of 241, setting the highest overseas score by an Indian outside Asia.

Despite scoring only 16 and six at Lord’s, Gill responded strongly at Old Trafford, scoring a composed 103 in the second innings to secure a draw after India was struggling at 0/2 while chasing 311 to avoid an innings defeat.

His innings played a crucial role in India drawing the series 2-2.

Gill concluded the five-match series with an impressive 754 runs in 10 innings, averaging 75.40, and was named Player of the Series. His run total was the second-highest in a single ICC World Test Championship series.

The young captain’s knack for converting starts into significant scores, particularly under pressure, was instrumental in India’s comebacks, reinforcing his position as a leading batter in global cricket.
