Son Heung-min Claims Tottenham Hotspur ‘Legend’ Status After Europa League Triumph

BILBAO: Following Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-0 victory against Manchester United in the Europa League final at San Mamés Stadium on Wednesday, Son Heung-min jokingly referred to himself as a ‘legend’ of the club.

This victory represents a significant milestone for the 32-year-old South Korean forward, who joined Spurs in 2015. It is the first major trophy in his career at both the club and international levels, especially after experiencing disappointment in three previous final appearances.

Son conveyed his immense joy after the match, even declaring himself a legend. He pointed out that in seventeen years, no one else had accomplished what he had, which made him the happiest person.

Son’s Statement

“Let’s just say I’m a legend. Why not?” Son remarked.

“Seventeen years – no one has been able to do this, so with amazing players, let’s say [I am] probably a club legend.”

“This is what I have always dreamed of. Today that dream became a reality. I am the happiest person in the world right now.”

The South Korean forward, boasting 133 international caps, initially moved to Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen for £22 million, having scored 29 goals in 87 appearances for the German side.

During a 3-1 loss to Manchester United, he made his 454th appearance for Tottenham, coming on as a substitute.

Previously, South Korea was defeated in the 2015 Asian Cup final, and Spurs lost the 2019 Champions League and 2021 Carabao Cup finals.

Heung-min shared his feelings during the match, admitting he felt pressure and desperately wanted the victory and the trophy.

Heung-min’s Feelings

“I felt the pressure,” Son stated.

“I wanted it so much. For the past week, I was dreaming about this game every night. It finally happened, and now I can finally rest easy.”
