Heaney Aims to Conclude Boxing Career at Cherished Football Ground
Nathan Heaney, the former British middleweight titleholder, announced Thursday that his final boxing match will occur in Stoke-on-Trent. He stated he would retire if a future fight cannot be arranged.
The 34-year-old is scheduled to face Grant Dennis at King’s Hall in Stoke this Saturday, in what he considers a critical, must-win situation.
Heaney, also known as ‘The Hitman,’ aspires to end his career at the stadium of his favorite football club. He acknowledged that even with a victory, it would mark his last appearance in the ring.
“I’ve always pictured stepping away from boxing on my own terms. The last thing I want is to retire after a defeat,” Heaney commented.
“Therefore, my goal is to secure a win and then have the opportunity to retire when I choose.”
Heaney expressed that discussing retirement feels unusual, reiterating his intention to win Saturday’s match while minimizing errors.
“Let there be no doubt, the objective is to triumph on Saturday and make one final effort to deliver what the city deserves,” Heaney asserted.
“We’ve consistently filled every venue for the past five years; the support has been incredible.”
Heaney added that the optimal scenario involves fighting at the iconic ground next year. Alternatively, a victory could lead to one final bout at King’s Hall.
“I’ve earned this. I enjoy fighting under Frank’s banner. Ideally, we’ll fight at the stadium next year,” he concluded.
“If that doesn’t happen, I’ll win, express my gratitude, and have one last fight at King’s Hall.”
