Haddin Criticizes Stokes’ Conduct in ‘Handshake Controversy’
Former Australian cricketer Brad Haddin has voiced his disapproval of England captain Ben Stokes, focusing on his behavior during the ‘handshake controversy’ that followed the fourth Test between India and England.
In an Australian YouTube podcast appearance on Wednesday, Haddin took aim at Stokes for allegedly suggesting an untimely conclusion to the match while India held a commanding position.
The heart of the issue stems from Indian all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar’s rejection of Stokes’ draw proposal. Instead, they chose to continue batting, both achieving centuries.
Haddin noted, “It was interesting at the end of that Test match because India were two for none. England were energized, thinking they would secure the Test victory. However, the partnership that unfolded was remarkable.”
He specifically lauded the resilience displayed by the Indian team, highlighting the contributions of Shubman Gill and KL Rahul.
Haddin further commented, “Throughout the game, India demonstrated immense determination and remarkable application with their batting.”
The former wicketkeeper argued that England forfeited their right to dictate match conditions once the tide turned against them.
He elaborated, “Suddenly, when England realized they couldn’t win, the suggestion was to halt the game. It appeared that everything should stop because England was no longer enjoying the play.”
Haddin expressed his approval of India’s approach, stating, “I appreciated India’s approach; they rightfully earned the opportunity to remain on the field as long as necessary.”
He showed his support for Jadeja and Sundar’s choice to pursue individual milestones.
Haddin concluded, “They were entitled to reach their centuries. The discontent arose simply because things didn’t unfold in England’s favor, and they didn’t receive their desired outcome.”
