Gillespie Views Hesson’s Appointment as a ‘Great Opportunity’
Jason Gillespie, the former head coach for Pakistan’s red-ball team, has commented on Mike Hesson’s designation as the head coach for Pakistan’s white-ball squad. He conveyed his support while also reflecting on his experiences with the national team.
In a recent interview, Gillespie expressed surprise at Hesson’s appointment but highlighted the role’s potential.
Gillespie stated, “There are always surprises. Reflecting on my own journey, you occasionally question certain decisions. However, the chance to collaborate with Pakistani players presents a remarkable opportunity for any coach.”
The former Australian player mentioned that his departure had already been discussed publicly. He also stated that he understood why Hesson accepted the position.
“My reasons for leaving are well-known. However, from a coaching perspective, it represents a challenge. It’s a chance to challenge oneself, support player development, and foster team growth. I understand Mike Hesson’s decision to seize this opportunity.”
Gillespie spoke highly of the Pakistani players, describing them as dedicated and receptive to learning.
“The players display excellent coachability. They are attentive, respectful, and a pleasure to work with. Their eagerness to improve makes the experience enjoyable. This attracted me to the position initially—the chance to work with exceptional cricketers and individuals,” he noted.
Though he hasn’t spoken with Hesson lately, Gillespie mentioned their acquaintance.
“I haven’t contacted Mike recently, but I know him. We spent time together years ago during my coaching tenure in Zimbabwe. He is a wonderful person, and his appointment is excellent for Pakistan cricket. If given the space to operate without interference, I believe he will guide the team to success.”
Gillespie advised Hesson to embrace the journey and enjoy the experience.
“Simply enjoy the journey. He will value working with the players and coaching staff. It will be fun and fulfilling. The players are enthusiastic about learning and dedicated to improvement—he will have a great time.”
Notably, the Pakistan team has entered a new phase under Mike Hesson and T20I captain Salman Ali Agha, marked by a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh in Lahore this month.
Pakistan is also expected to play Bangladesh in a three-match T20I series in July, as proposed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), but official confirmation is pending.
Following this, the team led by Salman Ali Agha will tour the USA in August for an ODI and T20I series against the West Indies.
