Giants Secure Victory Over Phillies with Bailey’s Inside-the-Park Homer
SAN FRANCISCO: In a dramatic finish, Patrick Bailey propelled the San Francisco Giants to a 4-3 walk-off triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies at Oracle Park on Tuesday. His three-run, inside-the-park home run, which bounced off the right-field wall, occurred with one out in the ninth inning.
The Phillies had taken a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning thanks to Kyle Schwarber’s two-run homer. The Philadelphia bullpen maintained this advantage until the ninth.
Closer Jordan Romano (1-4) struggled in the ninth, starting with a double by Casey Schmitt. After an out, Wilmer Flores singled to centre, setting the stage for Bailey. Bailey then drove a fastball from Romano into right-centre field, where it eluded centre fielder Brandon Marsh.
Bailey then easily rounded the bases, securing the Giants’ ninth walk-off win of the season.
Ryan Walker (2-3) earned the win after recording the final out in the top of the ninth.
Earlier, with the score tied at 1-1, Schwarber hit his 28th home run, sending the ball into the water beyond the right-field wall at Oracle Park.
Taijuan Walker pitched the initial four innings, conceding one run on two hits, with two walks and three strikeouts.
Robbie Ray was relieved after pitching five and two-thirds innings, having allowed one run on four hits, three walks, and five strikeouts.
Bailey and Jung Hoo Lee each tallied two hits for the Giants, who had no extra-base hits until the ninth inning.
Schwarber and Nick Castellanos both had two hits for the Phillies.
Justin Verlander of the Giants is scheduled to pitch against Jesus Luzardo of the Phillies in the series finale on Wednesday, as Verlander aims for his first win with his new team.
