Germany Edges Denmark in Euro 2025 Qualifier

The German team, former champions, are currently leading Group C with a perfect six points after two games.

Sjoeke Nuesken and Lea Schueller scored in the second half, propelling the eight-time champions closer to the Euro 2025 quarter-finals. Their 2-1 victory against Denmark has left the Danes facing a potential early elimination.

Germany, trailing 1-0 amidst controversial VAR decisions, leveled the score after being awarded a penalty in the 56th minute. Nuesken confidently converted the spot-kick, placing it precisely in the bottom corner.

Schueller then put Germany ahead ten minutes later. A failed clearance by Denmark landed at her feet, and the Bayern Munich forward directed the ball into the far corner.

Earlier, Germany’s Klara Buehl had a goal disallowed for offside, met with disapproval from the crowd at St Jakob-Park stadium.

This interruption seemed to disrupt Germany’s rhythm, allowing Amalie Vangsgaard to score for Denmark in the 26th minute with a well-placed shot from a narrow angle, beating Ann-Katrin Berger.

Prior to that, Germany believed they had earned a penalty due to a Denmark handball, but VAR determined the incident occurred outside the penalty area, leading to further jeers from German supporters.

Germany’s progression to the quarter-finals will be confirmed if Poland fails to defeat Sweden in their Group C match later on Tuesday.

In their opening match, Germany defeated Poland, but it came at a cost, as captain Giulia Gwinn sustained a knee injury that ruled her out of the tournament. Banners showing support for the absent captain were visible among the fans on Tuesday.

Despite the significant loss of Gwinn, the team’s resilience allowed them to recover from a halftime deficit, marking only the fourth time they’ve achieved this in Euros history.

Germany has been a dominant force in the Euros since their first victory as West Germany in 1989. In the 2022 final, they were defeated 2-1 by England.
