Gauff Seeks Serving Solution with MacMillan Ahead of US Open
NEW YORK: In a significant move to improve her serve, Coco Gauff has enlisted Gavin MacMillan, a highly regarded biomechanics coach, just before the US Open. This decision follows her split with one of her coaches. MacMillan is known for his work with Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s top-ranked player, in refining her serve.
Gauff, 21, who has recorded a tour-leading 320 double faults this season, hopes MacMillan can address this critical weakness. She spoke about her decision at Flushing Meadows, underscoring her dedication to making progress.
“I understand the level I aspire to reach in my game. I’m not interested in maintaining a style of play that doesn’t align with my goals,” she stated.
MacMillan’s assistance was pivotal in Sabalenka’s serve reconstruction in 2022, which led to three major titles, including the US Open the previous year. Sabalenka has openly acknowledged MacMillan’s impact on revitalizing her performance.
Gauff’s serving inconsistencies have been evident, such as her 23 double faults against Danielle Collins in Montreal and 16 in a loss to Jasmine Paolini in Cincinnati. With an average of 6.8 double faults per match, a notable example is her fourth-round defeat to Emma Navarro at the 2024 US Open, where she committed 19 double faults.
The decision to bring in MacMillan also involved parting ways with coach Matthew Daly, which marks her second coaching change within a year. Gauff remains dedicated to continuous improvement.
Gauff anticipates that resolving her serving issues under MacMillan’s guidance will enhance her overall game as the US Open commences.
“I am focused on the process of continuous improvement. I believe I am on the verge of a breakthrough, and rectifying this aspect of my game will consolidate everything,” she added.
