Fluminense Manager Credits Team’s Semifinal Run to Attitude and Effort

Fluminense has embraced their underdog status as they prepare for their semifinal match against Chelsea. Manager Renato Gaucho has lauded the team’s mindset, which he believes has been crucial to their impressive journey.

In a remarkable turnaround, 62-year-old Renato has transformed the club from relegation contenders to giant slayers in a mere three months. The team recently triumphed over Champions League finalists Inter Milan in the round of 16 and Al Hilal in the quarterfinals.

Renato clarified that he had no interest in other clubs, using the term “ugly duckling” to describe his club’s financial position.

Financial Disparity

“When I refer to us as the ugly duckling, I mean our financial situation compared to other clubs,” Renato stated. “Fluminense’s financial resources are only about 10% of those of these major clubs, which have the means to acquire top-tier players.”

Renato attributes their semifinal appearance to the squad’s dedication, focus, and commitment.

Keys to Success

“Fluminense reached the semifinals because of the players’ attitude on the field, their unwavering concentration, and the collective hard work of the entire team,” he emphasized.

The Brazilian coach is meticulously planning for Chelsea, describing the match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as a strategic “chess game” that will hinge on tactical execution.

He also noted that patience will be essential and highlighted the intense heat.

“This will be a test of patience. We will proceed with caution,” Renato remarked.

“Possession will be incredibly vital, especially with a 3 p.m. kickoff. The heat is extreme! Constantly chasing your opponent without the ball will be exhausting.”
