Blackmore Urges Amorim to Consider De Gea’s Return to Manchester United

Clayton Blackmore, a former Manchester United defender, has suggested that Ruben Amorim should consider bringing back David De Gea as the team’s goalkeeper, according to recent reports.

Blackmore suggests that de Gea’s departure was influenced by Erik ten Hag’s preference for Andre Onana, a former player of his. The former Manchester United player now wants Amorim to think about the Spanish goalkeeper again.

“United should try to bring back de Gea if it’s at all possible. I would definitely bring him back. I played with Peter Schmeichel and Neville Southall, and in my opinion, de Gea is the best I’ve ever seen. He was making more mistakes toward the end, but United’s performance as a team was declining, which forced him to exert more effort,” Blackmore stated.

“When you’re forced to work harder, you’re more likely to make mistakes. United pushed him out because of concerns about his ball-handling skills, but his passing was good when he wasn’t under duress.

“I had no issues with de Gea. Ten Hag wanted to replace him with his own guy, and I believe that was a mistake. That year, he won the Golden Glove and had 15 clean sheets. Why would you want to get rid of someone like that?”

Following the expiration of his contract, De Gea departed from United in 2023. He then took a year off before signing up with Fiorentina in 2024.

Lee Sharpe, another former Man United player and sports television analyst, also talked about Onana’s potential departure.

“I believe the goalkeeping position is up for debate. Is it a top priority? No. However, if the chance arises to improve and get a little money for Onana, I believe they will investigate it,” Lee Sharpe stated.

“I’m still shocked they let David de Gea leave. I realize his previous two seasons weren’t great, but I still believe he outperformed Onana. He makes some excellent saves, but he also lets in some goals due to schoolboy mistakes.”
