Akram Khan Critiques Bangladesh’s Batting Approach
DHAKA: Former captain of Bangladesh, Akram Khan, voiced his concerns on Wednesday regarding the team’s performance, specifically the ODI series loss to Sri Lanka. He questioned the mindset of the Bangladeshi batsmen.
In a statement to the media in Dhaka, Akram noted that the batters didn’t seem mentally equipped to handle the challenges they faced.
Batter’s Performance
“The batters aren’t exhibiting their usual style of play. Observing their batting, it appears they are not performing as they typically do in the Dhaka League or even when representing the national team,” Akram stated.
“It’s possible they’re being overly cautious. I believe they may be under excessive pressure mentally.”
Akram directed his criticism towards the top and middle order for their perceived lack of accountability.
“Fundamentally, the batters should aim to bat through the entire 50 overs. However, in our situation, the bowlers are frequently left to handle the final 10 overs. Under such circumstances, achieving the intended run rate becomes challenging,” he explained.
Akram highlighted that such recurring errors are seldom seen in other teams.
“Regardless of the outcome, you rarely witness these kinds of mistakes from other teams. These issues are escalating. While occasional lapses are understandable, this has become a persistent pattern.”
Akram observed that these batting struggles have been a recurring issue for the past two years.
“I’ve observed significant batting problems over the last two years. This mindset needs to be overcome. Otherwise, optimal performance becomes unattainable. Pressure will mount, leading to a negative spiral.”
Akram also alluded to a potentially negative atmosphere within the team, hinting at possible dissatisfaction.
“Certain attitudes can also impact the team’s dynamics. Reactions to run-outs, for example, can be telling. It’s crucial to remember that every player contributes to the team’s success. If these patterns persist, the team’s trajectory will turn negative,” he cautioned.
Expressing his concern, he cautioned that if Bangladesh’s batters fail to correct their mistakes promptly, they could develop into significant issues down the line.
“Observing the game, the players seem to be under undue stress. The reason for this pressure is unclear. However, excessive pressure hinders normal gameplay.”
“Judging by their batting approach, errors, and demeanor, they don’t appear to be playing their natural game,” he concluded.
Notably, Bangladesh suffered a 99-run defeat in the decisive third ODI in Kandy, marking their third consecutive series loss in this format since July 2023.
Notably, in all three matches, Bangladesh did not bat for the entirety of their allotted 50 overs.
