Federer Highlights Alcaraz’s Strengths, Emphasizes Aggressive Play

Tennis icon Roger Federer, during the 2025 Laver Cup, lauded Taylor Fritz’s impressive victory against Carlos Alcaraz. He also discussed the importance of an aggressive game plan when facing the world’s top-ranked player.

Alcaraz has experienced only a handful of defeats this season. His triumph at the US Open propelled him past Jannik Sinner in the rankings.

This strong performance positions him as a frontrunner for the year-end ATP Finals.

Federer shared his insights on the strategies for overcoming Alcaraz, suggesting that tactical maneuvering, while difficult, remains an option against the 22-year-old.

Federer’s Analysis

Federer remarked, “It depends on the court surface. Some surfaces don’t allow for overpowering your opponent. At times, against Alcaraz, you need to outsmart him, which is incredibly challenging.”

He added, “His court coverage and speed mean you must approach each point with the determination to win it twice.”

Federer noted that Alcaraz’s athletic ability often puts his rivals under considerable strain. “It can raise doubts, even when hitting a routine forehand that would typically be a winner,” he stated.

The Swiss legend emphasized that he would amplify his aggressive approach. “I would adopt a highly aggressive strategy against him on an indoor court, similar to Taylor [Fritz], consistently attacking, disrupting his comfort zone, varying my play, and approaching the net,” Federer explained.

Federer also commended Fritz, who defeated Alcaraz in straight sets at the Laver Cup, showcasing his diverse skills. He said, “Taylor performed exceptionally well, delivering crucial serves when needed and maintaining overall consistency.”

He concluded, “In defense, you need to display your complete range of skills against Carlos, as he will test them and usually find a solution. His defeat was unexpected, as he seemed to run out of time.”
