Imad Wasim Urges Azam Khan to Prioritize Fitness

Former Pakistani all-rounder Imad Wasim has encouraged wicketkeeper-batsman Azam Khan to focus on improving his physical condition, especially managing his weight, to boost his on-field performances.

In a recent discussion on a local sports channel, Imad disclosed details from a frank conversation with Azam regarding his difficulties with both form and fitness.

“We had a discussion, just Azam and myself, talking about cricket. He was enthusiastic, and I offered advice on addressing certain issues, suggesting he needed to lose a little weight, not a drastic amount like 30 or 40 kgs, just a bit,” Imad stated.

Emphasizing the importance of both physical fitness and mental toughness, Imad highlighted the need for self-discipline for athletes like Azam and fast bowler Naseem Shah.

“He needs to align his mindset with the game, as he possesses incredible talent that he’s displaying globally. One poor season doesn’t define him. With a 3-4 month break ahead, he understands the need to work diligently on his fitness. Both Naseem and Azam are individually capable of winning matches,” he commented.

The 36-year-old also recognized Azam’s resolve to recover from recent setbacks and use failures as motivation for a significant comeback.

“Naseem is dedicated to his training, and Azam needs to put in even more effort. I am confident that once Azam commits to intensive training, he will follow through because of his passion for the sport. Sometimes, a couple of unsuccessful tournaments can be eye-opening, and he will return stronger,” he concluded.

It is worth noting that the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman experienced a disappointing performance in the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10 while playing for Islamabad United.

He only managed to score 66 runs in seven games, with an average of 11.00 and a strike rate of 101.53.

On the international stage, Azam has participated in 14 T20Is for Pakistan, accumulating 88 runs at an average of 8.80 and a strike rate of 133.33.

His most recent appearance was against the United States during the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Dallas — a match that Pakistan narrowly lost.
