Latif Backs PCB’s Decision on Senior Players in T20Is

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has voiced his approval of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) choice to transition away from prominent cricketers like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi in the T20I format.

During a recent interview on a local online platform, Latif conveyed his support for granting seasoned players greater latitude to pursue opportunities overseas.

“They are participating in the Big Bash and will make substantial earnings, and I doubt they would want to return. That’s just my viewpoint. The PCB ought to afford them some freedom to explore other leagues. Otherwise, it’s perfectly acceptable,” Latif commented.

The former wicketkeeper also highlighted the significance of investing in emerging talent.

“New players should be afforded an opportunity; it’s a favorable situation, particularly with the Asia Cup and other forthcoming events. Everything is satisfactory; the game will continue to advance,” he added.

Notably, Pakistan’s leading fast bowler, Shaheen Afridi, was designated as the top overall selection in the Big Bash League (BBL) Season 15 Draft, which took place on June 19. Brisbane Heat successfully acquired the services of the left-arm fast bowler.

The highly anticipated BBL player draft occurred earlier today, with six of the eight franchises indicating their interest in securing national team players.

Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan was chosen as the third platinum pick, while England’s Luke Wood was selected second.

Shaheen, aged 25, was the premier selection in the draft, chosen under the platinum category by Brisbane Heat.

Rizwan secured a contract with Melbourne Renegades, signifying his BBL debut and augmenting his experience in international leagues, notably including the BPL.

Star batter Babar Azam had been pre-signed by the Sydney Sixers prior to the official draft and was slated to make his BBL debut. The franchise exercised its pre-signing option to guarantee the former Pakistan captain’s participation.

For context, Shaheen, Rizwan, and Babar last played in a T20I for Pakistan in 2024 against South Africa.

They have been absent from the shorter format since that time and are not included in the plans for the imminent tours of Bangladesh and the West Indies, or the prospective tri-nation series involving the UAE and Afghanistan.
