Ashwin, Dindigul Dragons Cleared of Ball-Tampering Allegations in TNPL
SALEM: Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and his Dindigul Dragons team in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) have been exonerated from allegations of ball-tampering. This follows an internal inquiry that found no substantiating evidence regarding the claims made by Siechem Madurai Panthers.
Allegations Arise After Match
The controversy originated after the TNPL 2025 match held in Salem on June 14. Madurai alleged that Dindigul illegally altered the ball’s condition using specially treated towels.
Complaint Details
Shijit Chandran, the coach for Madurai Panthers, suggested that the unusual wear on the ball negatively impacted their team’s batting performance during the game.
Chandran’s initial complaint, directed to the Madurai franchise CEO before reaching the TNPL, stated, “The ball’s state quickly declined during our innings, hurting our batsmen’s performance.” He also claimed that Dindigul’s towels contained unauthorized substances, which constituted cheating.
TNPL Investigation and Findings
However, after a thorough examination, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan affirmed the investigation found no basis to support the allegations.
“The towels were issued by TNCA and available to both teams,” Kannan stated. “The umpires and match referee maintained full control over the ball during the match. No issues were noted during play, and no solid evidence was provided.”
Procedural Issues and Further Review
Kannan additionally pointed out that the Madurai franchise did not adhere to the correct procedure, as they submitted the complaint over 24 hours after the match and failed to address it to the TNCA honorary secretary.
Despite this, the TNPL reviewed the complaint to maintain fairness and transparency. Madurai was granted until June 17 to present any verifiable evidence, such as videos or images. Failure to do so may lead to disciplinary action under the TNCA code.
Match Outcome
In the game, the Dindigul Dragons defeated the Madurai Panthers convincingly, successfully chasing a target of 151 runs in under 13 overs, with notable performances from Ashwin and Shivam Singh.
