Shami Unlikely for Asia Cup: Claims Chopra
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra expressed uncertainty Wednesday regarding Jasprit Bumrah’s participation in the approaching Asia Cup, citing worries about the key bowler’s physical condition.
In a statement made on his YouTube channel, Chopra implied that Bumrah’s presence is not assured, particularly if he is absent from the fifth Test against England.
“Bumrah’s involvement is questionable once more. Nevertheless, assuming he is fit, because if he also misses the fifth Test, then he should participate in the Asia Cup, at least in my view,” Chopra commented.
He called India’s team selection for the competition intriguing but anticipated it would mirror the previous composition.
“It will be fascinating to observe the team selection process, although it should not differ significantly from the previous one,” he stated.
Chopra also indicated that decisions regarding the captaincy would be revealed closer to the event.
Furthermore, he dismissed the possibility of Mohammed Shami’s selection, noting that the seasoned bowler was undergoing fitness evaluations in preparation for the Champions Trophy.
“I am fairly certain that Mohammad Shami will not be included. His participation was solely to evaluate his fitness level and ready him for the Champions Trophy.
“Now that time has passed, and should he not feature in the Test team, I doubt he will participate in T20 cricket at this stage,” Chopra concluded.
The Asia Cup 2025 will use the T20 format and is important preparation for teams before the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will jointly host in February.
A total of eight teams, divided into two groups, will compete for the title. Pakistan and India are in Group A, along with UAE and Oman, while Group B includes Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.
The tournament commences with a Group B match between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9.
Pakistan will begin their campaign against Oman on September 12, followed by the high-profile match against India on September 14. Their last group match is scheduled for September 17 against the UAE.
