Pujara Backs Kohli and Sharma’s Retirement Decisions
Former Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara voiced his support for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma on Monday, emphasizing that the experienced pair do not require external guidance regarding when to retire from international cricket.
In a conversation with an Indian media outlet, Pujara stated that both athletes possess the necessary expertise and status to determine their own futures without undue influence from others.
“I don’t feel the need to offer advice, as they stand among the premier players in limited-overs cricket. Even if their focus narrows to a specific format, they are acutely aware of what is expected,” Pujara commented.
Pujara also mentioned that Kohli and Rohit will conclude their careers on their own terms when they believe they can no longer effectively contribute at the highest level.
“These are incredibly gifted players. Consider the accomplishments of Virat and Rohit. They are also best positioned to recognize when it’s time to retire. They grasp the level of dedication needed, and should they maintain their fitness, they have the potential to play for an extended period,” he added.
The two accomplished cricketers concluded their T20I careers following India’s victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Earlier, in May 2025, they jointly declared their retirement from Test cricket within one week of each other.
While reports suggest Kohli and Rohit are interested in continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, their place in the management’s future strategy remains uncertain.
Their most recent ODI appearances were during India’s Champions Trophy win in March 2025, where their leadership and vast experience proved essential.
Having already retired from Test matches and T20 internationals—Kohli stepping down from Tests in May 2025 and both ending their T20I careers after India’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph—the veteran duo continues to represent India in the 50-over format.
Reportedly, both players are anticipated to participate for the final time in their careers during the upcoming ODI series against Australia, which is scheduled for October 2025.
